Good book! (Rating 4 of 5)
I enjoyed this book very much. I found it similar in style to the Winnie Years series by Lauren Myracle, and in content to the Abby Hayes series by Anne Mazer. The difference was that it was written entirely in diary format. My favorite aspects of it were the character's strong voice and the relatability of several of the events (i.e., getting a dog, having a friend move away, realizing that someone you used to enjoy spending time with has changed, and feeling occasional jealousy or resentment toward a sibling). One aspect that I did not like at first was the fact that the book takes place in 2005, even though it was published earlier this year. I find it strange that the author would choose to write a book that takes place ten years in the past, because it is not far enough in the past to be "historical fiction", but it is still in a time period that the target audience will not remember. However, the time period is not much of a problem because once you get into the book, you forget that it does not take place in the present. Overall, I think that this is a book which would be enjoyed by girls of various cultures and backgrounds, and between the ages of 8 and 14.
