THE WAR IN THE NORTHERN STATES VVHILST the Spanish succession occupied Western Europe, another war, still more sanguinary, was raging in the north. This struggle offers a peculiar interest, as it is not the result of a subtle jealousy, but the love of glory, the ambition of a soldier-prince, or a princesoldier. The most illustrious characters adorned the north during the latter part of Louis' reign; these were Peter the Great of Russia and Charles XII. of Sweden. We see the two monarchs at the head of their armies directing the operations of the battles in person. It is from this that this war takes its epic character, quite strange till then to modern history. Sweden, strengthened in her external position by the peace of Oliva, which she had concluded with Poland after the death of Charles X. in 1660, prospered internally through the wise administration of Charles XI., who
