Dawn is the daughter of an affair between Morpheous, king of Dreamland, and a human mother. Deciding to shun her father, she blocks off his land. Then her mother decides to abandon her family to live with Morpheous, which just irritates Dawn to no end. But she gets by in a living as a dream doctor.
Then she is attacked in her dreams. She learns that a patient of hers is also attacked. So, she breaks down and talks to her dad about what is going on. Dawn learns that she is a Nightmare, protector of dreamers from the bad things in Dreamland. She then has to protect the patient that she is falling in love with, while stopping the thing attacking and killing others in their sleep.
I really like this book. I am excited for the next one. There is great development. I have to say that Noah gets annoying with his "I am not going to be a victim." I understand it has something to do with his hinted at background and does make a good character. If you like paranormal romances, definitely read this one

After reading many reviews making this book sound wonderful I feel like I need to share my thoughts as well. I just didn't really like this book. It was a really easy read, and the premise was something I would have normally liked, but I just couldn't feel for the characters like I normally would.
The plot of the book is pretty simple, girl falls for boy, boy has troubled past, but oops, girl is also a half dream being that can live in both the human world and the world of dreams. Girl then finds something evil stalking boy in his dreams and has to help vanquish it, but since she's been denying her abilities to walk in dreams for 28 years she isn't equipped to help him with it.
For starters, the author kept talking about the male hero (Noah) being troubled, but she never actually tells us why he's so troubled, just that he is. She skirts around the issue so much its almost overboard to make him seem so dark and brooding. Another problem I have with this book is that the heroine (Dawn) doesn't really ever seem to deal with her issues by the end of the book. They just all seem to disappear, which just made me even more confused. There's a subplot with Dawn and her mother and by the end of the book I would have thought it would have been resolved but it was left open-ended. I don't know if she's setting this up for more books about the same heroine or what but it just didn't work for me

Dawn is known as a Nightmare. The daughter of Morpheus and a human woman, Dawn has always been aware of just who and what she is. A top-notch dream analyst, Dawn's patients come to her with their sleeping problems and she in turn interprets their dreams. Her latest patient, Noah Clarke, is having more and more trouble sleeping and when he comes to her with tales of his dreams trying to kill him, Dawn doesn't want to invade his dreams but invade them she will if it means keeping the man she has come to love safe. These two enigmatic lovbers have a fight on their hands because evil is stalking them and it will take a concentrated effort from both of them to keep the bad guys away.
Kathryn Smith has intrigued me with Before I Wake. Not sure if I was going to like it, specifically since it is written in my most hated format, first person, I set out to begin reading with an open mind. Hours later I closed Before I Wake and couldn't believe how fast time had flown. I was held spellbound from beginning to end and found the suspense, sensuality, and emotions an invigorating mix. I can't wait for the next installment!

This book wasn't terrible but I think maybe falls better into the Young Adult category.
The plot was interesting, the characters developed but immature. Even the parents of the main character seemed immature and selfish.
Oddly, the author kept throwing out brand names of products. I started feeling like I was watching commercial television or a movie which was heavily branded. This became annoying pretty quickly!
If you're looking for a quick and easy read with no expectations, this one's for you
